vCenter 5 upgrade – “The Fully Qualified Domain Name cannot be resolved…..”

leave a comment »

During a vCenter upgrade from version 5.0.0 to 5.1.0 U1 I ran into an issue (see error message below):

Error: The Fully Qualified Domain Name cannot be resolved. If you continue the installation, some features might not work correctly.

Cause: This error was due to the installer not being able to perform a reverse lookup on the vcenter server name

Solution: Add a Reverse Lookup Zone for that specific ip subnet (the one vcenter is on)

  1. Add the Reverse Lookup Zone in DNS Manager
  2. Register DNS on the vcenter server to ensure it get’s added (ie. Start -> Run and type: ipconfig /registerdns)
  3. Go back to the DNS Manager, refresh and you should now see the vcenter server show up (ie. DNS name)
  4. Restart the installer and try again

The above fix may NOT be the solution for some but it was for me. In my particular case the reverse lookup zone did not exist. This was the cause of a re-ip project/neglect
