Error: Unable to create a snapshopt of the virtual machine…..

leave a comment »

When trying to backup vmdk’s directly from my vmware esxi datastore using backup exec 2010 I was receiving this error message:

e0009574 – Unable to create a snapshot of the virtual machine. The virtual machine may be too busy to quiesce to take the snapshot.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-38260

Solution: Open up vShpere Client and browse to the datastore that the VM resides in. There should be various snapshot files in that datastore which were created by Backup Exec (more than likely from previous backup jobs). In order to resolve the above error for me at least, I removed ALL of the snapshot files. After doing that I was now able to continue running back ups. I might note this is a backup job specifically using the “Vmware vCenter and ESX Servers” selection list.

“Granular restores cannot be performed for these volumes….” -Backup Exec 2010

with one comment

“Granular restores cannot be performed for these volumes….”

So I saw this error earlier today after a backup job finished for my external linux bind server. I had the selection list setup to do a vmdk backup through my esxi server. Turns out Windows operating systems only support the GRT (Granular Recovery Technology) backup feature. So running a backup with GRT enabled on a non-Windows OS (ie. Linux) will give you this error. However the back did finish successfully. Just a FYI 😉

(Granular Recovery Technology)
A backup option that is available with some Backup Exec Agents. Granular Recovery Technology lets you restore individual items from database backups. A separate backup of the individual items is not required for you to recover one item.

Backup Exec missing selection lists?

leave a comment »

I ran into a problem where my user defined selection lists were all missing in Backup Exec. This apparently is a common issue with backup exec. There are several fixes around this problem. My specific fix had to do with user authentication within backup exec. Go to Network –> Logon Accounts and make sure you have the correct logon credentials for the system account. I apparently was using the incorrect ones. I was trying to access my Vmware ESXi datastores to do additional backups and forgot to change it back. I now have separate accounts for this. See below image the selection list error:

Backing up Win2k8 DNS zone files

leave a comment »

I was setting up some backup jobs on my backup exec server and was wondering, “hey how the heck do I back up DNS on my domain controllers?” Well that’s easy. All you need to do is backup the DNS folder.

Location: %WinDir%\System32\dns

If you’re using other means of backups (ie. copy the folder to another location) make sure you stop the DNS Server service first:

Go to Run –> Type “cmd” –> net stop “DNS Server”

After it’s backed up make sure to start the service again:

Go to Run –> Type “cmd” –> net start “DNS Server”

With Backup Exec I really don’t have to stop/start the service since I’m utilizing “Advanced Open File Option”. This option allows to back up ANYTHING even it’s running in memory/locked or whatever.
